Upgraded Coffee

In my last blog post, I discussed the many benefits of using MCT oil in your daily diet. Didn’t have a chance to read it? Check it out here. Essentially, getting adequate amounts of quality saturated fats are integral to good health!

So how do I get MCT oil into my daily routine? Coffee! Yes, coffee 😉
Coffee is a slightly controversial topic within the health community whereby some people are all for it, and some people are completely against it. I am right in between. My suggestion is to limit coffee to one cup of quality organic goodness with some extras mixed in for good measure – so let me explain further.

Coffee is a caffeine stimulant that boosts alertness, enhances moods, and increases mental performance. However, not everyone tolerates it the same way, especially those who have adrenal fatigue. Our adrenals are small glands that sit above our kidneys that regulate our stress hormones relating to fight or flight. When we drink coffee or caffeine, it stimulates our adrenals to a point where they can become exhausted of always being in a stressed out alert mode. This can lead to a bunch of symptoms from anxiety, insomnia, headaches, depression, arthritis, digestive issues, heart disease, hypertension, just to name a few. So too much coffee can make a person feel sick!

At the same time, our health journeys can be challenging so asking someone to give up their much loved coffee is not always going to be realistic – especially, as I occasionally drink coffee myself. I do like suggesting cutting back on the amount (especially if you are drinking coffee in the afternoons or evenings), trying half caff as a replacement, and giving your body breaks here and there. There are also great coffee substitutes like the newer mushroom blends and dandelion root tea that have similar tastes without the negative effects.

Another option I recommend is to “bio-hack” your coffee – similar to the Bulletproof trend that emerged a few years ago. It’s something I do & love – and my clients have also really taken to it as well. Simply add a bit of MCT oil and collagen to your daily blend for the following advantages:

  • Releases caffeine at a slower pace resulting in little to no energy crashes
  • Helps keep you fuller longer
  • Reduces the effects of coffee jitters

Bio-Hacked Coffee Recipe

1 cup of Brewed organic coffee
1 TBSP of MCT Oil
1 TBSP of Collagen
Splash of nut milk, optional

Optional add ins: maca, cacao powder, turmeric, cinnamon, and/or vanilla.

Stir or blend everything together & enjoy !

Note: people that follow the specific Bulletproof lifestyle will also add ghee into their coffee. Ghee is a type of clarified butter that has great health benefits. For example, it has conjugated linoleic acid, fatty acids, fat soluble vitamins, has a high smoke point, improves digestion, can lower inflammation, and is lactose and casein free. However, this addition means that you must blend the coffee, which isn’t something I feel like doing in the mornings (if Im being honest). If you are blending your coffee, please be aware that some blenders like the Nutribullet are not meant for hot liquids!

If you don’t like the MCT oil in your coffee, try adding it to your smoothies instead. But at the very least, try adding a scoop of collagen to your coffee. It really doesn’t alter the taste or consistency too much but has a ton of health benefits. Read more about why I love collagen here.

Did you know the best time to have a coffee is not right when you wake up? It would be around 9:30 to 11 am – the time when people used to take a traditional coffee break. When we wake up, it’s best to have warm lemon water or apple cider vinegar diluted in water to gently wake up the body after a nights rest. Hitting your body with a caffeinated coffee first thing in the morning can be especially jarring to the body.

So next time you decide to make yourself a coffee, I hope you’ll try this version & let me know how you feel 💖
